Overview

Calibration is a common process within the sensor industry and is used to correlate a measurement to a known reference standard. For Fibos, this means we need to correlate a change in wavelength to an engineering unit, such as temperature or pressure. Fibos has the capability to do commercial calibrations in the Toronto office; we are not qualified to provide formal calibration certificates yet.

An example calibration setup is shown in the image below. We are using the OGA-01 to measure optical temperature probes in the Fluke Drywell (a device that can set and hold a specific temperature). We also have a reference RTD temperature probe in the drywell to be our reference sensor; we will correlate wavelength shift to temperature that is read by this RTD sensor. Calibration curves are collected and plotted on PC software..

Industry Standards

Commercial calibration certificates can be generated by any lab or company and do not need to follow a specific standard. To provide an accredited calibration certificate, the lab or company would need to provide evidence to a certifying body that calibrations are completed to a known standard. ISO/IEC 17025 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories is the main ISO standard used by testing and calibration laboratories. In most countries, ISO/IEC 17025 is the standard for which most labs must hold accreditation in order to be deemed technically competent.

Although Fibos does follow the procedures outlined in the ISO17025 to perform calibrations, Fibos is not an accredited lab yet. Fibos plans in the future to obtain this certification. For more information on the 17025 standard, please see the ISO webpage.

Fibos Capabilities

Fibos has the internal capabilities to perform calibration for temperature probes from -20°C to 1000°C and can calibrate pressure sensors up to 10,000psi. Fibos can also perform vibration and strain-based calibrations. At the moment, the equipment Fibos uses for calibration is not designed for high-volume manufacturing. As product volumes increase, revisions to the calibration procedures and equipment utilized will change to meet demand.
